Since I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I researched ways in which to reduce my risk of a recurrence. There are several natural substances that induce apoptosis (spontaneous cell suicide) in cancer cells. Research has
found that green tea is one of them. It is rich in polyphenols and catechins, which are strong antioxidants. I am dedicated to drinking my 5-6 cups of warm green tea every day. In the winter, especially, it is warming and soothing and something I look forward to.
However, green tea and weight loss have been linked as it is also thought that green tea increases thermogenesis, or heat production, in your system. However, some believe it is the caffeine that encourages green tea weight loss.
It is also believed that one of the catechins in green tea, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and caffeine work synergistically which increases metabolism effecting weight loss. When consumed over time, it is thought that the catechins in green tea are really what encourages weight loss. But, at this point, these are theories that still need investigation. Until comprehensive research is done as to the exact mechanism encouraging green tea weight loss, we will not know the exact reason for its effectiveness.
Another common theory linking green tea and weight loss is that green tea effects our blood sugar. This interference inhibits glucose uptake into fat cells. When the glucose is inhibited there is an influence on fatty deposits. The Chinese believe that if one consumes green tea, they will stay slim.
In order to maximize the benefit of green tea weight loss, exercise must be incorporated into your regime. By simply consuming green tea, you may be improving your endurance by up to 25%. This is why the number of calories that are burned after consuming green tea appear higher than if the same exercise is performed without consuming green tea first.
Research has found this to be true in studies done on mice, but no conclusive studies have been done regarding calorie burn in terms of humans as of yet.
If weight loss is your goal, green tea can be a good aid in this endeavor. Combined with a good diet high in organic fruits and vegetables and low on processed foods and exercise, green tea can be an important tool.
Since incorporating green tea into my lifestyle, I have not noticed whether or not it has improved my ability to lose weight. I have made many changes to my diet and exercise routine and have lost 50 pounds. I don't know whether or not my weight loss was impacted by my green tea consumption, but it certainly hasn’t hurt! It is good for you and tastes great. Why not give it a try?
