Most people are aware of the impact of air pollutants. Smog, pesticides, and vehicle exhaust are recognized as major health threats. But how many individuals recognize the dangers in their homes? Unfortunately, there are only a few. Home is where the heart is as a noted line goes. It is where we spend time with our families, our friends and our loved ones. Since we spend so much time at home, it is also where our health is.

It's true that eating well, exercise and enough sleep are the foundation of good health and prosperity for all ages. But having a healthy home is also important. There are simple steps you can take to ensure your home is a healthy environment for you and your family.

  • Keep away from synthetic carpets, furniture and clothing. It may be difficult to do because it is sometimes difficult to find these home goods at affordable prices. But it is easy to look for an organic cotton mattress, or organic cotton jeans.
  • Use safe, nontoxic cleaning products throughout the home. Products that are used in kitchens, bathrooms, and polished floors.
  • Open the windows and / or the skylights regularly. Some say do not do this, because it allows the dirty air from the outside to get in, but nothing can be worse than trapping the bad air inside the home and not allowing that air out. Imagine if you are sitting inside a room that was just painted - you can not breathe. Thus, open up your home! This is particularly important to do in the winter months when your home is most closed up. Let some fresh air in when possible. This will help with allergens and freshen up the air inside. An air purifier is a great device to keep in your home. It will help to purify the air and keep it allergen free.
  • Keep your home clean and clutter free. In our home, we are constantly looking for dust bunnies everywhere. The lesser dirty stuff, the cleaner the air.
  • Make sure the bathroom has a window that can be opened during the shower, or at least a fan to push air out. Wet bathrooms creates the perfect environment for molds to develop, which lead to bacteria that probably will hurt you and soon build up into a dangerous situation.
  • Make sure that your stoves and water heaters checked regularly to prevent leaks or other problems. Natural gas leaks are deadly and can lead to an explosion. Also, if you are not burning clean gas as is what should happen, you may be releasing carbon monoxide into the home, which is even more lethal.
  • Buy lots of plants. They purify the air and pump oxygen into your home.
  • Know your ingredients in personal care products. Just because the label says "gentle" or "natural" does not mean that they are safe. The more natural the product, the better for you it is. A general rule to follow is if you cannot eat something, don’t put it on your skin! There are more and more natural products available. The internet or health food stores are a great resource to locate these products.
  • Turn off all appliances when not in use. You will not only save on your electric bill but you will cut electromagnetic exposure to you as well.
