When I learned I had breast cancer, I felt as though I was not going to come out of this alive. I thought that my life was over and that my children would grow up without a mother. As the smoke cleared from all of the shock and confusion I was feeling, I dug into research and found some information that I was not expecting to find.

During the last 10 years prior to my diagnosis, I had let things slip in my life. I had always been somewhat health conscious and kept myself in good shape. I had dealt with a divorce, several years of supporting my children with no financial support and other financial stresses that placed an enormous amount of pressure on me. I believe that the burdens I was dealing with contributed to the break down of my health and my ability to fit off disease. Plus, my diet had become less than stellar and somehow 50 lbs had crept onto my small frame and just did not want to leave.

The more reading I did about the causes of breast cancer and the treatment options available, I found that I absolutely have some control in my outcome. With my stage 1 breast cancer, I felt that going through radiation and chemotherapy treatments would be overkill. I had the tumor removed surgically with clear margins. The success rates of radiation and chemo less than encouraging. In my case, the risks of these treatments did not outweigh the benefit I may have received. There was something like a 2% chance of my benefiting from the harsh and potentially dangerous treatments available to me. I learned that I would receive more benefit from changes to my lifestyle than I would from these treatments. It was a no brainer for me.

Instead, I decided to take a more natural approach. I spoke to several oncology doctors and found a couple of wonderful homeopathic doctors who put me on a regime of supplements and dietary changes. I cut out all processed foods from my diet. I cut out refined sugar and dairy.

I found a new way of eating that was not at all like the eating I had grown accustomed to that was full of comfort foods and highly processed foods. This is how to lose weight fast naturally! I make all of the meals for my family from scratch (as my grandmother did and lived to a healthy 102 years old). I actually make many meals that are based on dishes my grandmother used to make. They are healthy and nutritious and helped me to drop the extra pounds I had been carrying around.

It is a year later and I have lost the 50 lbs that had crept up on me. I feel better than ever and feel in control of my life. It is so simple and makes so much sense that food is really the cornerstone to our health. What we eat, the nutrients we take in, affect our health and are the cause of so many of the chronic degenerative diseases that are rampant in our society today. As Michael Pollen, the author of so many wonderful books about the food industry, states in his catchy, poignant mantra: “eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” This is great advice.
