- Peanut butter on whole grain bread - spread one to two tablespoons of natural peanut butter (not the kind that is filled with additives) onto whole grain or Ezekiel bread. This is a satisfying snack and low carb choice.
- Cheese - a low carb food that can be rich in calcium as well. If you don't do dairy, there are soy and almond versions that fit the bill as well.
- Olives - a great snack food that is low in carbs. Olive oil also provides important fats that are heart healthy.
- Nuts - unsalted, raw nuts are your best bet. They are high in fiber and protein and low in simple carbs. Nuts are also a rich source of healthy fats.
- Cabbage – (red or green) is low in carbs and rich in iron. Try making a chopped coleslaw with raw cabbage for a delicious, nutritious addition to any meal. Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable that is rich in important nutrients.
- Apples - an apple a day keeps the doctor away. There may be some truth to this old saying. Apples and other fruits are good sources of insoluble and soluble fiber which will help to reduce overall blood cholesterol.
- Grapes - full of vitamin C, these little powerhouses are rich in vitamins and are a low carb snack.
- Strawberries - rich in iron and fiber and low in carbs to boot.
- Watermelon - a delicious summer treat that is rich in iron and has a high water content.
- Blackberries- rich in vitamins, a great low carb food.
