Natural Healing Through the Elimination of Dairy Products

There are many natural healing therapies available for a multitude of ailments. I found that by changing my lifestyle and becoming aware of what my body’s needs are, I could have huge results without relying on potions, products or pills.
For example, over the course of my life, I have suffered from chronic headaches. Many of these headaches were debilitating. I missed many days of school, work and life suffering and trying to numb the pain I was feeling. Many times nothing worked. I would suffer for days, sometimes more than a week with the pain, disorientation and nausea that accompanied these migraines. I never understood why I suffered so much. "Why me?" I would think. "What did I do to deserve this agony?"

I also suffered from chronic nasal congestion. From the time I was 9 years old, I began using nasal decongestant sprays in order to breathe freely. Part of this problem was a deviated septum with which I was born. However, when I had surgery to correct the problem, I still found myself unable to breathe freely and was soon hooked again on the nasal sprays.
It was through the diagnosis of breast cancer that I discovered things about my body that I never took the time or effort to uncover previously. At first, of course, I again wondered, “Why me?” “What did I do to deserve this?”
Allergy testing revealed that I have strong allergies to dairy products. Up until that point, I was a huge cheese lover (I suppose I still am! Does anyone stop being a cheese lover just because they don’t partake any longer? I will always love the creamy, rich, delicious taste and texture of cheese. I just don’t eat it anymore).
Through my cancer journey, I had read several books relating a connection between dairy products and breast cancer. Realizing that I am allergic brought new questions to light about the years I had introduced an antagonist, dairy, into my body. I was eating cheese all of these years and suffering from headaches, nasal congestion and now breast cancer. Is there a connection? Unfortunately, science cannot tell us that at this point. But I realized that my chronic conditions were not a matter of “why me?” This was actually a matter that I had control over. I immediately eliminated all dairy products from my life.
My own experience of uncovering dairy allergies and actively eliminating these foods them from my life, made enormous improvements to my health. When I stopped the dairy, I immediately stopped suffering from the nasal congestion that had plagued me for 35 years. No more nasal spray. No withdrawal, no conscious elimination. I just stopped needed it. Up until that point, I would panic if I found I had left the house without my nasal spray. I would not be able to breathe freely and get sinus headaches as a result if I didn’t use my spray at least 5-6 times each day. Now, I just stopped needing it. It was like magic.
Dairy elimination also squelched the majority of my migraine suffering. Once suffering a couple of times a week from these headaches, I was now faced with a migraine about once a month. And, now I can directly relate them to hormonal changes in my body (which I am addressing as well).
A food group that I had come to simply consider a staple in my life was making me sick. I could never understand why I felt so bad, so often. Giving up dairy was difficult but with the improvements that I feel, I would never go back to consuming them. My health is too important to me.
Plus, there are suitable substitutes that are delicious, nutritious and won’t cause the side effects that dairy products do. For example, soy products (as long as they are organic and not genetically modified) are very healthy and a great source of protein. You can find cheeses, milks, meats and yogurts derived from soy and other ingredients such as nuts or wheat. I have also learned to prepare my meals from scratch and have eliminated most processed foods from my diet as well. I focus on eating fresh, organic, natural foods. The foods my body needs to thrive.
To date, my cancer is under control. I will always live with regular monitoring and the lifestyle changes I have made that I believe have improved my health dramatically. I feel better than ever and am enjoying improved vitality.
The important take away message here is to be aware of the needs of your body. If you are suffering from a chronic issue, do your best to uncover the underlying cause. By treating the cause instead of masking the symptoms, natural healing can occur in your body. Our bodies are wonderfully powerful machines capable of healing and keeping us well. It is our responsibility to give our bodies the tools it needs in order to maximize its natural healing potential.
